The Infrastructure Unit Systems Support (IUSS) is a specialist group providing guidance and support National Department of Health, the South African Development Bank and the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR).

As part of its remit to improve performance and standards in health facility design it has drafted 45 design guides, covering specific departments and more general topics.

The Fellowship is in discussion with the IUSS regarding various forms of possible co-operation, including peer review of the draft design guidance. As a pilot the Fellowship has conducted a peer review of the draft guidance for Emergency Centres. The review was conducted by specialist health planners and hospital architects, and gave wide-ranging comment on the strategic and design issues raised in the document. Some additional content was proposed, and comparisons were made with recent UK guidance on the subject, including some yet to be published.

The peer review comments have been well received and incorporated into IUSS’ own internal review processes.

‘Many thanks for a very thorough review and valuable input. It’s reassuring to know that we are on the right track!’
