The recent visit by Mike Nightingale and Nigel Draper to Cape Town included an intensive series of meetings in the district of Hout Bay, where the Fellowship is focusing its efforts at the local level.
Nathan Roberts of the Everyday Heroes Club kindly facilitated contact with a number of leaders of voluntary groups operating in the area. These meetings furthered understanding of the key issues to be faced in Hout Bay and in South Africa in general, enabling the Fellowship to better focus its efforts there and to identify specific actions it should take.
As a direct result of these meetings the Fellowship has:
- Â agreed to fund specific activities of the Everyday Heroes Club and Ikhaya Le Themba (organisations both working with children in Imizamo Thembu township)
- commenced efforts, in conjunction with the newly formed Hout Bay Partnership, to facilitate the development of a conceptual plan for unlocking the potential of Hout Bay
- identified a potential longer-term initiative to enhance work opportunities for those who are disadvantaged in the employment market in the area.
